Volunteer of the Month: Jay Bubrick | September 2024

Sep 1, 2024

Each month Hunger Task Force is honored to recognize an individual or organization that goes above and beyond in their service to the organization.

Hunger Task Force relies on the help of more than 16,000 generous volunteers every year. From food sorting and building healthy food boxes for seniors to helping individuals shop the Mobile Market and harvesting at The Farm, volunteers help Hunger Task Force feed people today and support our work in ending future hunger.

Jay Bubrick has been a dedicated volunteer at Hunger Task Force since September 2013. For over a decade, Jay has contributed to the Hunger Task Force mission by packing Stockboxes, assisting on the Mobile Market and getting his hands dirty at the Hunger Task Force Farm. His commitment stems from a deep appreciation for the organization’s impact and the camaraderie of fellow volunteers. Jay’s unwavering dedication and enthusiasm make him a standout volunteer, and we are honored to recognize him as our Volunteer of the Month for September 2024!

Q: What made you want to volunteer?

Jay: I began volunteering at Hunger Task Force in September 2013, while also working four days a week as a pharmacist. My connection to Hunger Task Force began through a friendship with Senator Herb Kohl. Wanting to give back in some way, I asked Senator Kohl how I could show my appreciation. He suggested getting involved with Hunger Task Force, and that’s how my journey with this incredible organization started.

Q: What volunteer activities you help with?

Jay: I began by volunteering to pack Stockboxes every Wednesday morning, which was my one day off from work. Of all the programs I volunteered for at Hunger Task Force, that one remains my favorite. I also volunteer on the Mobile Market, help with mailings and work at the Hunger Task Force Farm.

The Hunger Task Force Farm is such a wonderful initiative—freshly picked food for people who truly lack the ability to afford it. The staff are fantastic: they’re friendly, knowledgeable, and they make even the most tedious tasks enjoyable. The Wednesday morning volunteer group is the reason I keep coming back. With people like Phil, Miriam, Ron, Jeff, and Jim, how could I not enjoy volunteering with a group like that?

Q: Why do you continue to pick Hunger Task Force?

Jay: Every person I have interacted with at Hunger Task Force makes it clear that Hunger Task Force is a truly outstanding organization. Southeastern Wisconsin should take great pride in the incredible work Hunger Task Force is doing to feed families in our area.

Q: What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at Hunger Task Force?

Jay: I’d invite them to come on in! There’s something for everyone to do, regardless of skill level or ability. I’m sure they’ll be glad they came to the Hunger Task Force.
