Affordable Groceries Are No Joke to Jeremy Warwick, Hunger Task Force Mobile Market Driver
Prior to joining the Hunger Task Force team as a route representative nearly seven years ago, Jeremy Warwick dreamed of becoming a Stand-Up Comedian. Wanting to focus his career on bringing a smile to peoples’ faces, he learned that being a route representative for Hunger Task Force provides the perfect avenue for him to do so while feeding people in need.
“When I saw that Hunger Tak Force was hiring, I knew this was my opportunity to be able to be my goofy self and help people,” said Jeremy.
For the first six years of his career with Hunger Task Force, Jeremy delivered nutritious food to network partners to feed those in need in our community through partner food pantries, meal sites, low-income senior centers and homeless shelters.
“On my route, I provided much needed shelf staple food free of charge. I also delivered fresh fruits and vegetables from the Hunger Task Force Farm during the growing season and additional fresh produce from the USDA or community partners whenever possible,” adds Jeremy.
However, nearly one year ago, Jeremy assumed the role of route representative for the Mobile Market which is a grocery store on wheels that travels to food deserts throughout Milwaukee County to offer fresh produce at 50% off Piggly Wiggly store prices to neighbors in need.
“This may sound corny, but whenever I pull up, I get goosebumps,” says Jeremy. “It’s so rewarding. Sometimes when I arrive people applaud. The customers are really appreciative because so many don’t have access to grocery store produce due to transportation or financial barriers.”
When they are shopping, Jeremy takes the time to get to know clients and learn more about their backgrounds and how they found out about the Hunger Task Force Mobile Market.
“A lot of the time, clients just need someone to listen to them and make them feel valued. So many don’t have people who check in on them regularly,” adds Jeremy. “As a dad, it hits home when I see families shopping. When parents or guardians are shopping, I try to entertain the kids so they can get the most for their money and focus on feeding their families.”
All shoppers are welcome on the Mobile Market. The market accepts debit cards, credit cards and Quest EBT. For each Mobile Market stop, Piggly Wiggly stocks the shelves with a healthy selection of fruits, vegetables, milk (dairy and nondairy options), chicken, beef, pork, deli meat, cheese, yogurt and more.
