Volunteer(s) of the Month: John & Kim Goelz | February 2025
Each month Hunger Task Force is honored to recognize an individual or organization that goes above and beyond in their service to the organization.
Hunger Task Force relies on the help of more than 16,000 generous volunteers every year. From food sorting and building healthy food boxes for seniors to helping individuals shop the Mobile Market and harvesting at The Farm, volunteers help Hunger Task Force feed people today and support our work in ending future hunger.
John and Kim Goelz are a dynamic duo whose shared passion for giving back has turned volunteering into their favorite weekly tradition. Since joining the Hunger Task volunteer community, they’ve embraced opportunities to pack Stockboxes for local seniors, dig in at The Farm and more! For John and Kim, volunteering is not just about making a difference in the community—it’s also a meaningful way to spend quality time together. We are proud to honor John and Kim as our Volunteer(s) of the Month!
When did you start volunteering with Hunger Task Force?
John & Kim: Kim began volunteering with Hunger Task Force in September 2023. John joined shortly after in May 2024.
What volunteer activities do you help with?
John & Kim: Together, we’ve regularly helped pack Stockboxes for local seniors and joined the fun during the 12 Days of Khrismas Community Service Day with Khris Middleton. Kim also lends a hand at The Farm and assists with mailings and other administrative tasks, as needed.
What’s your favorite part about volunteering?
Kim: I enjoyed volunteering at food banks when we lived in Washington, so when we moved back to Milwaukee, I sought out Hunger Task Force. I was drawn to their mission and wanted to give back to our community. After just a couple of shifts, I was hooked and became a regular Wednesday afternoon volunteer, thanks to the amazing people I met—especially Faith and Julia!
John: It started with a free day on my calendar, and I decided to join Kim during her shift at Hunger Task Force. After experiencing the energy and camaraderie of the volunteers and staff, it became contagious. The more I volunteered, the more I wanted to come back. Now volunteering is something we both look forward to.
What made you want to volunteer?
John & Kim: We were initially drawn to Hunger Task Force because of its mission and values, which align with who we are. But beyond that, it’s the transparency of the organization—seeing firsthand how our efforts impact thousands of families and individuals—that keeps us coming back. We believe, “To whom much is given, much is required.” We’ve been blessed, and it’s our duty to give back.
What’s been your most memorable experience volunteering as a couple?
John & Kim: We love bringing treats to our Wednesday afternoon Stockbox packing shifts. It’s turned into a friendly competition between the volunteers to see whose treats are the crowd favorite. (John insists his are better, but we let the group decide… one bite at a time!)
What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at Hunger Task Force?
Kim: The staff and volunteers at Hunger Task Force make serving such a fulfilling experience. Everyone is friendly, caring and passionate about helping others. There are so many hands-on opportunities to get involved and support the community.
John: Just give it a try. Life gets busy, but once you start, the connections you make and the energy from the team are truly contagious. You’ll find yourself wanting to come back again and again.
