Chief Operations Officer Reflects on Her First Year at Hunger Task Force
At the start of 2024, Jess Pontious transitioned from the for-profit sector to join Hunger Task Force as Chief Operations Officer. Charged with enhancing operational efficiency and strengthening the agency’s HR functions, Jess quickly immersed herself in the nonprofit sector’s unique challenges and opportunities.
“It is inspiring to work with a talented team so deeply committed to our mission,” Jess says. “Coming from the for-profit world, where the bottom-line drives decisions, it’s refreshing to focus on creating meaningful community impact.”
Jess’ priority was establishing measurable metrics to track progress and improve operational efficiency. She set benchmarks to evaluate the agency’s performance year-over-year while identifying areas for improvement.
Rising costs in 2023 added another layer of complexity, requiring Jess to find creative ways to optimize resources. By focusing on operational adjustments, Hunger Task Force has been able to stretch donor dollars further to ensure its programs continue to meet growing community needs.
“We can’t control rising costs, but we can manage how we respond to them,” explains Jess. “These changes help ensure donor dollars go further, allowing us to serve more people in need.”
Throughout the year, she also gained a deeper appreciation for Hunger Task Force’s extensive reach and innovative programs. Jess was particularly impressed by the Local Food Purchase Assistance (LFPA) program – a state-funded initiative that partners with Wisconsin farmers to supply fresh produce for the agency’s pantry network.
“The LFPA program is a perfect example of collaboration,” Jess says. “It not only supports local farmers but also increases access to fresh, nutritious food for families and seniors in need.”
One of Jess’s biggest personal growth moments this year was stepping out of her comfort zone.
“I’ve always preferred working behind the scenes, but this role has taught me the importance of engaging directly with partners and stakeholders,” reflects Jess.
While the transition from the for-profit sector was challenging, Jess finds fulfillment in her work. “Even on difficult days, I remind myself that what we do feeds people. That makes every challenge worthwhile,” she shares.
As Hunger Task Force prepares for 2024, Jess plans to modernize operations by implementing cloud-based systems and automation. These advancements will increase efficiency and help the agency serve its mission more effectively.
Reflecting on her first year, Jess is proud of the progress made and optimistic about the future. “This year has shown me the power of mission driven innovation and teamwork in driving change. I look forward to building on this foundation to create an even greater impact,” she said.
