50 Faces. 50 Stories. 50 Years of Fighting Hunger.

Hunger Task Force is proud to be Milwaukee’s only Free & Local food bank and Wisconsin’s anti-hunger leader. In celebration of our 50th Anniversary, Hunger Task Force is highlighting “50 Faces of Ending Hunger,” honoring the anti-hunger heroes who champion Free & Local and support our mission to end hunger.

As a well-respected business owner, Dan Sidner has become a known name in Milwaukee’s restaurant industry co-owning Black Shoe Hospitality. In 2007, he and his business partners opened their first restaurant Maxie’s and later Blue’s Egg and finally Story Hill BKC. Since the doors first opened to Maxie’s, Dan has been a proud supporter of Hunger Task Force.

“We opened Maxie’s on Kentucky Derby weekend with a Derby party, which was small with about 40 or so people and featured a charitable component,” says Dan. “Hunger Task Force was the benefitting organization and has been ever since. Our original donation was nearly $130 dollars and today it has grown to more than $17,000 through our Kentucky Derby party. It’s our tradition of giving – and celebrating.”

Making sure everyone in Milwaukee has access to healthy food played a big part in Dan’s decision to support Hunger Task Force. As a restaurant owner, he has always been appreciative of high-quality ingredients. Learning more about Hunger Task Force’s operational model, Dan understood that his donor dollars are directly used to purchase nutrient rich foods for seniors and families who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford them.

In addition to supporting Hunger Task Force through the annual Derby Party, Dan Sidner joined the Hunger Task Force Executive Council – a group of leaders who support the Hunger Task Force vision and mission and provide guiding leadership to the organization.

“I encouraged the team at Hunger Task Force to have a person from the restaurant community on Executive Council. Since I was invited to join, I have worked to leverage my connections to generate increased awareness of Hunger Task Force and foster new partnerships to benefit the organization and the community served.”

If Dan could change one thing, it would be that more Milwaukee residents understand the scope of Hunger Task Force. More than a food bank, Hunger Task Force works to serve as a voice for the voiceless to work to end hunger, operates a 208-acre full-service farm to grow more than 500,000 pounds of fresh produce for Milwaukee’s hungry, runs a grocery store on wheels that visits Milwaukee’s hungriest food desert communities and provides community nutrition education.
